Final Fantasy Type-0 Delayed Two Weeks

Square Enix announced today a delay in Final Fantasy Type-0's release. Originally scheduled for release on October 13, the game will now arrive on October 27. Pricing remains the same, 7,700 yens.

As reason for the delay, Square Enix said that it hopes to further improve quality.

A downloadable demo of this PSP-exclusive was released on August 10th had earned the game a lot of praise, though the camera control was a near-universal complaint. Some found it a tolerable, minor annoyance while a select few felt it to be a deal breaker, with most gamers falling between the two extremes. Hajime Tabata then personally told fans that he and his staff would fix the problem, as well as the Phantoma System.

With the former release date of October 13th, and review outlets needing the game about a month before street date, Tabata’s August 14th decision left very little time to fix things. Hopefully for fans, this extra two weeks lets the team do what it needs to do.

Going along with the game's delay, the CD release for the game's "Zero" theme song will also be delayed from October 5 to October 19. The game's Original Soundtrack will now be released on October 26.

Ifreet, Golem, Odin, Shiva and a battle video showing the Phantoma system.

These new Final Fantasy Type-0 gameplay clips show off some major self sacrifice as the characters off themselves to bring out summons Ifreet, Golem, Odin a Shiva into battle. I think you'll agree, it's totally worth it!

Is the PS Vita HDD too small?

Sony still haven't announced the storage specs for the PSVita yet, and it is possibly due to the fact that they haven't secured a deal with flash manufacturers for the best price, or they aren't going to offer a large enough amount for gamers' needs.

Currently the PSPgo has 16GB built in flash memory, and after owning one for several months, and with the addition of PS Plus, you quickly realize that this amount is way too little. Also it is fair to take into consideration of the sizes of games for PSP and PSV. A PSP UMD can hold upto 1.8GB of data and typically the download sizes are smaller than this. However, when you compare that to PlayStation Vita games can start at 2GB and are up to 8GB in size and potentially higher. This means that a 16GB or even 32GB amount of storage would be completely impractical.

This begs the question, how much should it have? I personally think that a 128GB amount of storage space will suffice, if not higher, but what seems more likely to happen is a 64GB amount of storage space, which potentially will be increased in later SKUs.

Rumor: PS2 Games On PS Vita - God of War II

For those of us who were not lucky enough to snag one of the first PS3s released, one of the biggest and most desired features that owners wanted on all of their PS3s was PS2 backwards compatibility (other than cross-game voice chat, but that's another story). Unfortunately, we know that is not exactly going to happen. Instead, as an alternative we are graced with HD collections and remasters of games. Then January 2011 comes and the PlayStation Vita (then NGP) is unveiled. Since then we have seen a lot more – The device looks great! The games look amazing! The new functions are just what gamers wanted! But there is one more thing that would be nice, some say – A PS2 emulator of sorts.  Having the ability to play some of those classic games on the Vita would just be icing on the cake!

It has already been confirmed that all downloadable PSP titles and PSOne Classics will be playable on the Vita. Well, thanks to some new images that surfaced, it looks like more news may be on the way. These photos that were simply showing off the Vita OS seem to also suggest that PS2 titles may indeed be playable on the PS Vita as seen in the photo below. Here we can clearly see God of War II as a playable title on the Vita.

While the resolution is a little blurry, you can see that God of War II, right next to the Monster Hunter option, is available. How will PS2 games be made available on the Vita? A downloadable option via the PSN Store (like that of the HD collection for the PS3)? If that is the case, would we be able to use cross-platform save data, that Vita has touted, to play while on the go and on the PS3 when at home? Or will it be remasters on the new physical media card for the Vita? Only time will tell if indeed these options will be made available and what more the Vita has in store for us. For all we know, this may just be a mock-up error on the part of Sony.

One should note this is also featured in part of another image from SCEE as can be seen here:
So sound off in the comments below, do you think PS2 games will be made playable on the Vita? What PS2 games would you want to be able to play on the Vita?

Sony Document Reveals Vita-to-PS3 Network And Connectivity Plans

Earlier this year Sony stated that the PlayStation Vita could act as a controller for PlayStation 3 games, but this idea and several others are being further expanded on and detailed by Sony.

Today a PDF file was discovered from a Keynote given at Develop in Brighton, the PDF reveals plans for Vita and how the new portable will interact with other Vita's locally and over the internet, what services the handheld will feature, DLC, as well as how the Vita and PS3 can interact – Vita as a PS3 controller but using Vita's unique features to enhance the game experience and several others are touched on.

The PDF document also details Vita's communication modes and how it will interact with the PlayStation Network, future updates, information on cross-platform play, cross-game chat, and much more. You can find all the Vita related slides from the PDF in our media gallery located here.

The E1000 PSP

Now you can get a good look at the new "E1000" model of PSP headed to Europe, one of the most curious announcements from Gamescom. We've got a gallery of official photos, allowing you to examine the budget-priced hardware in detail.

We like that the price-conscious streamlining resulted in such a clean, simplified look. If only Sony hadn't streamlined the Wi-Fi out of it.

Take a look.

Another PS3 Price Drop Announced

Sony just announced during GamesCom 2011 that the PlayStation 3 is now cheaper than ever, just $249. It's a great price for non-PS3 owners. But will this help them compete with Xbox 360 this holiday season?

For the past few months, according to the NPD numbers, the Xbox 360 has been dominating sales, and the Playstation 3 has been on and off, battling it out with both Microsoft and Nintendo. The console is selling more units in the U.S. than any other console in 12 of the past 13 months, even while console and software sales across the industry have slowed. The chances are now higher of us seeing Microsoft make the same move by announcing a new price drop for their console and Kinect. Can Sony’s exclusives compete with Gears of War 3 and Star Wars Kinect (Let’s be real; this game is going to sell a lot of units.)? Plus, a lot of UFC fans will be buying the console too, thanks to the addition of live UFC events to Xbox Live. There’s also the Halo CE 10 year anniversary (rumored to be bundled with a Halo 4 beta access code). I can keep on and on with why Sony will have some tough competition later this year.

Just because a company drops the price of their hardware, it doesn’t really mean sales will greatly improve. It’s all about the games & marketing. I was reading some comments posted on Twitter by Sony fans, saying how this PS3 price drop will “destroy” Microsoft . I have to disagree with this one, and here’s why: Sony needs to step up their marketing game. They have some great hardware, and they’re releasing some amazing games later this year, like Battlefield 3 from Electronic Arts, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 from Activision, Assassin’s Creed Revelations from Ubisoft (along with an exclusive on the beta), Resistance 3, The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and more. With this holiday season lineup, if they don’t beat Microsoft, then what’s the next excuse from the fans? Don’t say this too early: “Sony just kicked Microsoft in the b*lls” or “Microsoft isn’t innovating anymore“.

I have a question for you guys:

With Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 coming out later this year, what version of the games are you planning to get? And why?

Marketing is what it’s all about. That’s how you get consumers to buy your products. Remember last year? Kinect was too “casual,” but later, it managed to sell over 10 million units worldwide. I really want Sony to do great this holiday season because of this price drop. But remember, Microsoft can do the same thing later this month by slashing the price of its Xbox 360 — maybe even a cheaper Kinect. Competition in this industry is getting really good for us consumers. I’ll give Sony a few more months before saying that they won this holiday season.

But for now, I stand by this: The PS3 price drop will help Sony improve their unit sales, but they won’t beat Microsoft’s Xbox 360 this holiday season.

Heavy Iron Studio Says PS Vita Will Fail

Lyle Hall (President of Heavy Iron Studio)
The PlayStation Vita launch will be "a car wreck", believes Heavy Iron president, Lyle Hall. He told GamesIndustry.biz:

"If people aren't willing to pay $249 for a Nintendo 3DS why would they pay $299 for Vita?"

People don't want to carry more than one thing in their pocket, that's why Android and iPhone have done so well, they are the devices of choice, they offer multiple functions outside of gaming.

"People don’t want it."

Industry veteran (2K Games, Microsoft Game Studios), and new Heavy Iron employee Matthew Seymour added: “With all due respects to Sony and Vita, it's a car wreck. And how about Xperia Play? I’d love to pull up the numbers on that.”

Lyle Hall then continued:

“The technology is sweet. I’m a huge fan of mobile technology. But I just don’t know there’s a market out there any more for the hardware. I can’t see why you would want to put a device out that only does games.

“The consumer has spoken. We wanted to see that world exist – more players, more opportunities for us – but at the same time people don’t want that.

“Unless there’s a super technology paradigm shift it’s not going to shift back.”

Vita is set for an early launch in 2012 for Europe and North America, while Japan gets it at Christmas. We recently shared our thoughts on the turbulent handheld market here. So, do you agree with Lyle?

Latest Sales Number: PSP > 3DS!

For the week ended August 7th.
Following Nintendo's decision to slash prices on their 3DS handheld, sales of the device have collapsed (rightfully so), and sales of the PSP have seen some growth.

3DS sales came in at 4,132 compared to 35,619 for the aging PSP. The PSPGo managed to sell 7 units, which is still somewhat surprising given its price and pointlessness.

That difference is expected to close in the coming weeks, however, as Nintendo just cut the price from $250 to $170 in the U.S. (and similarly in Japan, EU).

All current owners will be offered 20 free games from the newly launched Nintendo eShop. Additionally, users who take advantage of the eShop deal are also enrolled in the "3DS Ambassador program," which allows for 10 free NES Virutal Console downloads like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong Jr. Finally, "Ambassadors" will also get 10 free Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games like Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Sony at GamesCOM 2011

For PlayStation Vita, GamesCom is going to be all about maintaining enthusiasm. With the device still some months away, Sony will probably use the event to instill another wave of excitement in the fans and media, and it will do that by showing compelling software. It would be ideal if the announced Vita software line-up doubled by the end of the show.

Elsewhere, it's probably going to be a quiet year for PlayStation 3. New media services across Europe are a certainty. It also wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Sony announced and demonstrated Vita’s LiveArea social network features on PS3.

But like 2009, GamesCom seems like the appropriate venue for a fresh PlayStation 3 price-cut. While the platform continues to have worldwide momentum, a $50 price-cut would definitely drive sales going into the holiday season. It’s also likely that SCEE will use GamesCom to debut its new marketing strategy, with the ‘Game Is Just The Start’ campaign looking like it’s run its course. There’s been some speculation of a $100 price-cut, and while that sounds ideal (bringing the PS3 down to the mainstream price-point of $199), it’s probably unnecessary at this point.

Elsewhere on PlayStation 3, expect new footage of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. New 3D and PlayStation Move content is always possible, but is unlikely to represent a big focus of the presentation. Software announcements from French developers Quantic Dream and DONTNOD are likely to be the most eye-catching PlayStation 3 reveals.

DONTNOD confirmed earlier in the month that it is revealing its sci-fi action title at GamesCom next week, though there is some speculation about whether the product is Sony published or not anymore. It was believed that the studios’ debut project had been signed up by SCEE last year, but there are rumours conflicting that now.

50+ Solid PS Vita Games Announced So Far

We are not sure how many more games are coming and how many of them will be released along with PSVita's launch window, but the handheld's launch line-up will probably be very solid.

Well, at least in U.S. and European regions because of the later release. Thus Sony would avoid a mistake, which Nintendo made with their 3DS. Lack of games, and especially lack of good and well-known games caused a lot slower sales than The Big N expected.

Sony already took care of delivering great and desirable first-party titles such as Uncharted, WipEout, Little Big Planet and other. However, it would be perfect if PSVita would receive one of those famous third-party FPS or RPG titles such as Call of Duty or Final Fantasy.

Sony's DADC Destroyed

Sony's DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) facility located in Innova Park, Enfield has been destroyed by London's ongoing riots.

The facility is responsible for manufacturing of CDs, DVDs, UMDs and Blu-Ray disks, and also houses high tech research labs working on emerging optical technology. It should be noted that most Playstation disks are printed at a similar facility based in Austria.

Update: A caller to BBC News has confirmed that the fire was started by looters, who fled the scene carrying Sony products.

No PS Vita This Year!

When Nintendo announced the price drop for the 3DS, everyone was speculating on how the new price would threaten the PlayStation Vita's sales this holiday season. Looks like it won't be hurting it at all. And that's because the PlayStation Vita won't be launching this holiday season, or in 2011 at all, at least not in the US or Europe. Japan, unsurprisingly, will get the Vita before year's end. If you are expecting to get your PS Vita, you will have to wait until 2012.

This news come straight from the source, SCEI chairman, Kaz Hirai. He states that this wasn't a delay, and that Sony is waiting to fill out their launch line-up before releasing the Vita in all territories, apparently learning a lesson from Nintendo's 3DS

Hirai was then asked if the 3DS price drop would affect the Vita's pricing, but Hirai snappily replied that there is so much value already packed in the Vita, the price will stand.

God of War 4 in Development

The question of Kratos being dead or alive can only be answered by the studio who left his fate hanging by the end of God of War 3, but what we can tell you is that the next iteration of the God of war franchise is underway and we found a bit of proof that this project does exist and is currently underway.

He has also been working on a concepts for an 'unannounced intellectual property' with Stig Asmussen (Director) and Ken Feldman (Art Director) during the last four months. These are the guys who molded Kratos in the third iteration of the God of War trilogy.

This gives us a good enough indication that  the next version of God of War has been under- construction for the last 4 months and involves the same set of  top executives who powered the God of War III , unlike the previous ones where both directors(Jaffe and Cory Barlog) left the company to start working on their own set of projects.

The question now lies whether it is in development for the PS3 or Sony's new powerful handheld the PS Vita
